Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It is performed when a tooth is damaged beyond repair, severely decayed, or causing crowding or infection.
Types of Tooth Extraction
Simple Extraction
- Used for visible teeth with a straightforward removal
- Performed under local anesthesia using forceps
Surgical Extraction
- Required for impacted, broken, or hard-to-reach teeth (e.g., wisdom teeth)
- Involves making an incision in the gum and possibly removing bone
- May require stitches and longer healing time
Common Reasons
- Severe tooth decay or infection
- Gum disease
- Impacted wisdom teeth
- Orthodontic reasons (crowding)
