Most ovarian cysts are harmless and settle on their own. Fibroids are common and often cause nothing at all. The question is not whether you have one — it is which kind, what it is doing, and whether it needs anything done about it.

When it is worth being scanned
Cysts and fibroids are frequently found by accident during a scan done for something else. These are the symptoms that make looking deliberately worthwhile.
Sudden, severe one-sided pelvic pain, particularly with vomiting or feeling faint, is not something to book an outpatient appointment for. Go to your nearest hospital emergency department.
Two different things in the same pelvis
Ovarian cysts
Fluid-filled sacs on or in the ovary. Most are functional — they form as a normal part of the cycle and disappear within a few months without any treatment. Others, including endometriomas and dermoid cysts, behave differently and are followed or treated rather than ignored. Size, appearance on the scan and whether it changes over time are what separate them.
Uterine fibroids
Non-cancerous growths of muscle in the wall of the womb, very common by the forties. What matters clinically is far less the size than the position — a small fibroid sitting inside the cavity can cause heavier bleeding and fertility problems than a much larger one growing outwards.

History and examination
Your symptoms, your cycle, previous scans and any family history, followed by examination where it adds something.
Pelvic ultrasound, complimentary
Performed by the gynaecologist during the same visit, with the findings explained to you in the room as a verbal report. No separate scan fee.
Bloods where indicated
Taken and processed in the building on the same day where your doctor decides they add something. Blood tests are priced at the visit.
A plan with a timeframe
Whether it needs watching, treating or referring, and if watching, exactly when to come back rather than a vague instruction to keep an eye on it.
The honest limits
Ultrasound is the right first test here, and a good one. Unlike superficial endometriosis, cysts and fibroids are usually visible on a scan, which is why this appointment answers the question far more often than not.
Some findings need more than a scan. Where the appearance is unclear, or where an MRI or a specialist opinion is the correct next step, your doctor will tell you so and refer you rather than repeating the same scan.
Surgery is not performed at Central Clinic. Where a cyst or fibroid needs removing, you will be referred to a surgical team with your scan findings and report.

Common questions
A scan found a cyst and I was told to ignore it. Should I be worried?
Usually not, and most functional cysts genuinely do resolve. What is worth having is a defined plan — which type it looked like, and when it should be rescanned to confirm it has gone. That is what this appointment gives you.
Do fibroids always need to be removed?
No. Many are left alone and never cause a problem. Treatment is decided by what the fibroid is doing to you — bleeding, pressure, pain or fertility — not by its measurement on a report.
Will this affect my chances of getting pregnant?
It depends entirely on type and position, which is exactly what the scan establishes. Bring it up at the consultation so it is factored into the plan from the start.
Should I come at a particular point in my cycle?
For cysts it can help to scan in the first half of the cycle, since that distinguishes a functional cyst from one that persists. Mention your dates when you message and our team will suggest a time.
Does the AED 250 cover the ultrasound?
Yes. The pelvic ultrasound is included in the consultation with a verbal report, at no separate charge. Anything beyond that is discussed with you before it happens. Prices exclude 5% VAT.
Can I bring scans done somewhere else?
Please do. A previous scan is what turns a single snapshot into a comparison, and comparison is often the whole answer.
