Two conditions, often confused
Endometriosis
Tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it, causing inflammation, scarring and adhesions. It affects roughly one woman in ten of reproductive age. Because the symptoms overlap with a long list of other conditions, women are often passed between specialists without anyone joining it up.
Adenomyosis
The same type of tissue grows into the muscular wall of the womb itself. It tends to produce heavy, dragging periods and a bulky, tender uterus. It can occur on its own or alongside endometriosis, and it is more visible on ultrasound than superficial endometriosis is.

An unhurried history
How long it has been going on, where the pain sits in your cycle, and what it stops you doing. This part matters more than any single test.
Examination where appropriate
Carried out by the gynaecologist, privately, and only where it adds something to the assessment.
Pelvic ultrasound, complimentary
Performed during the same visit with the findings explained to you in the room, as a verbal report. No separate scan fee and no second appointment.
A plan
What is likely, what to do about the pain now, and whether anything further is needed. Blood tests can be taken in the building the same day if required.
What a scan can and cannot show
Better said before you come than after.
An ultrasound finds some things and not others. It can show endometriomas on the ovaries, larger deposits, changes in the wall of the womb that suggest adenomyosis, fibroids, and several other causes of the same symptoms. It cannot rule endometriosis out. Superficial disease does not appear on a scan, and a normal ultrasound does not mean nothing is there.
The definitive diagnosis of endometriosis is made at surgery, by laparoscopy. That is not performed at Central Clinic. Where it is the right next step, your doctor will say so plainly and refer you on.

Common questions
I have had scans before and they were normal. Is there any point?
Yes. A normal scan does not exclude endometriosis, and a scan read alongside a proper symptom history is a different thing from a scan read on its own. Bring any previous results and reports with you.
Will I be told it is just period pain again?
No. If the pain is disrupting your life, that is the starting point of the conversation, not something to be talked out of.
Do I need to come at a particular point in my cycle?
Not usually. If there is a better time for your scan, our team will tell you when they confirm your appointment.
What if it turns out to be something else?
That is a useful answer too. Fibroids, ovarian cysts, infection and several other conditions produce similar symptoms and are treated differently. Establishing which one is the point of the visit.
Does the AED 250 cover the ultrasound?
Yes. The pelvic ultrasound is included in the consultation with a verbal report, at no separate charge. Anything beyond that is discussed with you before it happens. Prices exclude 5% VAT.
What happens if I need surgery?
Your doctor explains why, what it involves, and refers you to a surgical team. Surgery is not carried out at Central Clinic.
