Signs of hormone imbalance in women

  • Irregular, missed, very heavy or very light periods
  • Acne, oily skin or excess facial or body hair
  • Weight gain that is hard to explain
  • Tiredness, low mood, anxiety or poor sleep
  • Hair thinning or hair loss
  • Hot flushes or night sweats
  • Milky discharge from the breasts

These symptoms have many possible causes. A hormone test shows whether hormones are involved, so your doctor can plan the right next step.

What each hormone test shows

FSH test (follicle stimulating hormone)

Controls the growth of eggs in the ovaries. High levels can point to the menopause transition or reduced ovarian activity.

LH test (luteinising hormone)

Works with FSH to trigger ovulation. A high LH-to-FSH ratio is often seen in PCOS.

Estradiol test (E2, the main oestrogen)

Shows ovarian activity and helps assess irregular periods and menopause symptoms.

Progesterone test

Rises after ovulation. A level taken about 7 days before your expected period shows whether ovulation has happened in that cycle.

Prolactin test

A high prolactin level can stop or disrupt periods and cause breast discharge. Stress, some medicines and thyroid problems can raise it.

Thyroid (TSH) test

An underactive or overactive thyroid often causes period changes, weight change and tiredness, so it is checked alongside your reproductive hormones.

When to take a female hormone test

Hormone levels change through the menstrual cycle, so timing matters:

  • FSH, LH and estradiol: day 2 to 5 of your cycle (day 1 is the first day of your period)
  • Progesterone: about 7 days before your next expected period (around day 21 of a 28-day cycle)
  • Prolactin and thyroid: any day, preferably in the morning and not after strenuous exercise

If your periods are irregular or absent, message us on WhatsApp and the doctor will advise the best day.

Common Questions

How much is a female hormone test in Abu Dhabi?

Our Female Hormone Profile is AED 449, including a doctor’s consultation and 6 hormone blood tests.

Do I need to fast for a hormone test?

Fasting isn’t needed for these hormones. For the most reliable prolactin result, come in the morning and rest for a few minutes before the sample.

Which day of my cycle should I test?

FSH, LH and estradiol are best tested on day 2 to 5 of your cycle. Progesterone is best tested about 7 days before your next period.

Can a hormone test diagnose PCOS?

It helps. PCOS is diagnosed by combining symptoms, blood tests and a pelvic ultrasound. Our PCOS package includes all three.
