What is H. pylori?
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that lives in the lining of the stomach. It is one of the most common bacterial infections in the world, and many people carry it for years without knowing.
Where it causes problems, it is a leading cause of gastritis and stomach ulcers. Where it is found, treatment is prescribed and managed by your doctor.
Common symptoms
Many people have no symptoms at all. Where symptoms do appear, they commonly include:
- Burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen, often worse when the stomach is empty
- Bloating, or feeling full soon after starting a meal
- Nausea, loss of appetite, frequent burping
- Reflux or heartburn that returns whenever tablets are stopped
- Tiredness, which can be a sign of slow blood loss from an ulcer
Seek medical attention promptly, rather than booking a screening package, if you have vomiting of blood, black or tarry stools, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss.

Why each part is there
The blood adds what symptoms cannot
Long-standing gastritis or an ulcer can cause slow blood loss. Blood count, ferritin and B12 look for signs a conversation about symptoms cannot.
Not all upper abdominal pain is the stomach
The gallbladder, liver and pancreas sit in the same area and can cause similar pain. The ultrasound and the enzyme tests look at those directly.
Two visits, not one
The first visit is the consultation and the tests. The second is where the doctor goes through the results with you and explains what happens next.

Do I need to fast?
Some tests in this package may need fasting. We will tell you what is needed when you book.
Is this an endoscopy?
No. This package is blood tests, a urine test, an abdominal ultrasound and two doctor consultations. It is not an endoscopy and does not replace specialist referral where that is needed.
When is the results consultation?
Your results consultation is arranged once all your results are in.
